Basic Care of Butcher Block

Wood, like many other natural materials, shrinks as it loses moisture. Changes in atmospheric conditions can affect natural wood products, and extreme changes in the humidity may cause warping. These are not defects in the product or its manufacture and are beyond our control. Proper installation and care are the best prevention. Therefore, humidity is important and keeping your top (if finished with butcher block oil) oiled regularly is essential. For the first month your top should be oiled every two weeks. After you oil your top, allow the oil to penetrate the wood for 30 minutes or longer, then just wipe the remaining oil from the top. Over time, occasional oiling will do if the surface starts to look dry. With normal use, you will only need soap and water to clean your top. Do not leave water or any other liquid standing on your top as it may stain or raise the wood grain. With proper care, your wood top will last a lifetime!

For varnished tops, use mild soap and water to clean. Avoid chemical cleaners as they can break down the film finish over time. For a deeper clean, use a vinegar and water mix.

*Cracking - Hairline cracks that appear will not cause a problem if the oiling is done as recommended.
